Working as a Team
This painting by Grandma Moses shows a small town during winter. All the townspeople are working together to cook food, gather water, and chop wood. The painting has a sense of community and teamwork. Grandma Moses was born in 1860 and died in 1961, and many of her paintings are set in the eighteenth century. Although for the people in the painting this was probably everyday life, to people nowadays it seems as if they were very disadvantaged. They did not have electricity and had to use the resources around them to get food, water, and stay warm throughout the winter. The saying "it takes a village" is especially true for the subjects of the painting, and the people are all doing their part to sustain the village. When whole communities are at a disadvantage, they all work as a team. This is also true when natural disasters occur. People all help to rebuild cities and towns that are damaged.
"'Whenever you feel like criticizing any one... remember that all the people in this world that haven't have the advantages that you've had'" because people who are disadvantaged often work together to get through challenging times. They are strong and resilient, and persevere through their problems. When I want to criticize someone based on a problem they have, I try to remind myself that life is often challenging for them and that they are doing the best they can.
