People only see what they want to see look at me what do you see, a young lady? a foolish child? one thing I do and you judge me one person who did not now thinks I am foolish but why? I'm not foolish I'm smart and funny loving and supportive but I have come to find people only see what they want to see
When people criticize, they look only at disadvantages and traits that they see as undesirable. In other words, they see only what they want to see. The author of the poem said someone saw her as foolish, but she's "not foolish / I'm smart and funny / loving and supportive." This other person has only been looking at the writer's characteristics and picking out the traits he or she doesn't like, and has not thought about what makes the writer special. Luckily, the author is self confident. She comes to the conclusion that "people only see / what they want to see." This is generally true when judging others. For example, someone who does not do well in school might be seen as stupid only because of their lack of book smarts, but they are street smart or artistically smart. It is important to think about people with disadvantages before they are criticized because their lives and characters are so much more than just their faults.
This is like looking through a pair of glasses. For some people, they might see the world, and others, perfectly with that pair. Other people may look through the glasses and see a blurry image. Some people can see the best, others pick out the worst.
