Judging As I walk down the hall many people I see Different lives are lived so different are we from each other She's happy, he's mad That kid is suicidal we no not of others people's life yet we think we do what good does someone else's life do to yours we are all different with different lives He has tattoos she is well dressed one might be extremely nice while the other gossips of her friends Again what does someone else life have to do with yours is your life not exciting enough that you must talk of someone else's If so what a sorry life you must live.
The question we must ask ourselves is: what purpose does judging serve? What problem will be solved by criticizing others and bringing them down? Maybe the one who criticizes does so to make themselves feel better about their own faults. However, there are much better ways to battle a low self-esteem than lowering the position of others. The author of this poem points out that it is sad if someone's life is so boring that they must occupy themselves by discussing another's life. It is much more exciting and meaningful to do something important with life than to just comment on another person who is trying to make their life have a purpose. Nick Carraway's father is telling him to stop and think before he criticizes others, and he implies that to criticize others is ridiculous because they haven't had the same advantages as Nick. If Nick Carraway, a person with many advantages, judged others, it would put Nick in a negative light. Judgement, in my opinion, shows more about the one who is judging than the one who is being judged. It shows that the one who is judging is mean and critical, and looks for the negative aspects of others.
The poem also shows that people who are judged are often different from the standard. The world is interesting because "different lives are lived so different are we / from each other." It is not fair to criticize other people for what makes them interesting and unique. Being true to oneself is an accomplishment, and should not be criticized.
