I've got bi-polar disorder My shit's not in order I'm overweight I'm always late I've got too many things to say I rock mom jeans, cat earrings Extrapolate my feelings My family is dysfunctional But we have a good time killing each other
[Pre-Chorus:] They tell us from the time we're young To hide the things that we don't like about ourselves Inside ourselves I know I'm not the only one who spent so long attempting to be someone else Well I'm over it
[Chorus:] I don't care if the world knows what my secrets are (secrets are) I don't care if the world knows what my secrets are (secrets are) So-o-o-o-o what So what So what So what
I can't think straight, I'm so gay Sometimes I cry a whole day I care a lot, use an analog clock And never know when to stop And I'm passive, aggressive I'm scared of the dark and the dentist I love my butt and won't shut up And I never really grew up
[Pre-Chorus]
They tell us from the time we're young To hide the things that we don't like about ourselves Inside ourselves I know I'm not the only one who spent so long attempting to be someone else Well I'm over it
[Chorus:] I don't care if the world knows what my secrets are (secrets are) I don't care if the world knows what my secrets are (secrets are) So what So what So what So what I don't care if the world knows what my secrets are (secrets are) I don't care if the world knows what my secrets are (secrets are) So what So what So what So what
(I don't care if the world knows what my secrets are) So what So what So what So what
The song "Secrets" by Mary Lambert is the perfect example of why criticism won't even matter if she doesn't care about it. She lists things that people may criticize her for, like being overweight, passive aggressive, and always being late. Then she sings with a carefree tone, "They tell us from the time we're young / To hide the things that we don't like about ourselves / Inside ourselves / I know I'm not the only one who spent so long attempting to be someone else." Many people know they may be criticized for certain characteristics about themselves, and they try to hide these things to avoid judgment. They may have reasoning behind this, but it is bad in the long run because they cannot be themselves and people will not appreciate them for who they really are. In the past, I have withheld my preferences and ideas for fear of being judged or criticized, and now I am a bit more comfortable with who I am. However, it is still sometimes difficult to be myself.
After listing things about herself that she kept secret for fear of judgment, Mary Lambert declares that "I don't care the if world knows what my secrets are." With self-confidence, she knows that even if she is criticized she will be happy. Being assured of oneself should not depend on whether or not one is criticized, but on confidence and not caring about being judged. The advice given to Nick Carraway by his father is irrelevant if the criticized, disadvantaged person does not care about the opinions of others.
