Vulnerability
When someone is vulnerable, they make what Brené Brown calls an "emotional risk." Yet Brown argues that vulnerability is not weakness. Yet many people may be afraid to be vulnerable because they feel as if they will be judged or criticized. She says, "Vulnerability is not about weakness. It's about showing up and being seen." Revealing one's true self to others is, for some people, a difficult task, and there is the possibility of being criticized for it. Being vulnerable about disadvantages is even harder. Yet Brown puts vulnerability into a positive light, saying that vulnerable people are brave. She also claims that "vulnerability is the birthplace, of innovation, creativity, and change." If people are open about their disadvantages, it may help them in the long run. For example, if I am vulnerable about my food allergies and others are as well, then others are able to better understand and help me. Vulnerability, which is often a major part of TED Talks, is a powerful tool in bringing important issues to light.
It is important to follow the advice to "think about all the people in this world that haven't had the advantages that you have had" because if these disadvantaged people are brave enough to speak out about their problems, then they should be respected and not criticized. These disadvantaged people, as Brown says, are not weak. They do not deserve criticism. |
